Eyelids Surgery

Overview

  • Length: 1-2 hours (generally outpatient)
  • Anesthesia: General or Local with sedation
  • Normal recovery: Return to work in 7-10 days, Resume light exercise after 2-3 weeks, swelling resolves completely after 4-6 weeks
  • Possible side effects: Swelling, Bruising, mild discomfort

As our faces age, they lose tissue mass and skin begins to sag, which can give the face a deflated or weary appearance. More than any other feature, it’s our eyes that can make us seem tired. Eyelids Surgery can improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, restoring firmness to the area surrounding the eyes and making you look more rested and alert. The eyelids lift can treat:

  • Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or hides the natural contour of the upper eyelids
  • Excess skin that hangs down from the upper eyelids, sometimes impairing vision (Ptosis)
  • Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids
Men and women of all ages can benefit from this safe and proven procedure. Ideal candidates for an Eyelids Surgery have excess skin or fat, commonly referred to as “bags” under or above their eyelids. Dr. Min also specializes in the Double Eyelid surgery for people of Asian descent. Many people of Asian ancestry experience pronounced drooping of the eyelids and about 50 percent are born without a fold in the upper eyelids. Double Eyelid surgery includes adding a fold to the upper eyelids to give the eyes a larger, rounder appearance WITHOUT removing or diminishing your beautiful Asian features or identity. Eyelids Surgeries do not address drooping brows, fine lines or wrinkles, which is why they are often performed in combination with other procedures such as:

  • Facelift: raises and tightens the entire face
  • Brow lift or forehead lift surgery can reduce the appearance of droopy eyebrows and deep furrows and creases on the forehead.
  • Chin surgery may involve reducing the size of the chin by removing bone or enlarging the chin with implants.
  • Facial implants are made of silicone and can be placed in your chin, cheek or jaw to improve your overall facial symmetry and proportion.
  • Neck lifts are often combined with Brow Lifts. These procedures are used to remove fat and excess skin to eliminate wrinkles and bands and create a smoother, tighter neck appearance.
  • Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping surgery) can help bring your nose into better proportion with your face by making it larger or smaller. Your surgeon can also remove a hump from your nose or a dip from the bridge of your nose, or otherwise improve your nasal profile.
  • Otoplasty (ear surgery) is performed to reduce the appearance of excessively protrusive ears. This is one of the few plastic surgery procedures most often performed on young children.

How Does Eyelids Surgery Work?

Every procedure is unique, just as everyone’s eyes are unique, but most procedures involve the removal of some fat and excess skin. Some procedures also involve the removal of some muscle tissue. Dr. Min will make an incision in the natural crease of the eyelids and separate the skin and fatty tissue from the underlying muscle to allow for it’s removal. In some cases, fatty tissue may be redistributed or muscles alterd to provide shape and firmness to the eyelids. Dr. Min may also employ more modern techniques such as lasers of wrinkle fillers (with patient approval) to achieve the desired result. In the case of a Double Eyelid Surgery (Asian Blepheroplasty), the eyelids will be reshaped to ad a crease where there previously was none to allow the eyes to open more fully and give a more alert, rounded look. Your will experience some bruising and swelling during the first several days. You will be given medication and special cold compresses to reduce pain and swelling, as well as prescription eyedrops. You can expect your vision to remain slightly blurry for 2-3 days, but these effects will not last. If you use contact lenses, you may have to wait 1-2 weeks before wearing them again. Within 2-3 weeks, eyes should feel like they are opening and shutting naturally, and because eyes heal so well, patients rarely notice any scarring.

Your Eyelids Surgery Options

Dr. Min will help you customize the Eyelids Surgery procedure to give you a natural, energized face to show the world. The procedure itself will vary slightly from person to person, and may be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. It may also be performed in combination with other procedures such as a face or brow lift.

Your Initial Eyelids Surgery Consultation

The role of the consultation is to ensure that you feel informed, confident and excited, and we’ll take as much time as we need to get there. During your initial consultation, Dr. Min will ask you about your desired appearance, as well as questions about your general health to determine if he can meet your expectations. He will analyze your eyes and evaluate the shape, the quality of skin and underlying bone structure. After your consultation, photographs will be taken for your medical record and additional analysis. He will walk you through your options, explain the details of the Eyelids Surgery procedure, and answer any questions you may have. You will have an opportunity to view extensive before and after photos. Dr. Min will assess factors such as bone structure, skin type, the amount of underlying fatty tissue, and the contour of your face. He will share and explain his opinions with you about what is most appropriate for your face and what results you can expect. Together you will decide on the details and timing of your procedure. Finally, Dr. Min will make sure you know exactly what will happen on the day of your procedure, what you will experience while you recover, and what you can expect in the months and years to follow.

Safety & Risks of Eyelids Surgery Surgery

Our approach at Newvue is always to put our patients’ safety above all other concerns, and Dr. Min is a recognized expert with an impeccable track record for facial sculpting. We have invested in absolutely state of the art tools, and our on-site surgical suite is one of the first in the region to be fully approved under the stringent new safety standards. Eyelids Surgery is a very common and safe procedure. Nonetheless, we feel it is important that all our patients fully understand the risk associated with this—or any—surgical procedure. The most important thing to know is that Dr. Min and Newvue will stand by you should any complications arise and do everything we can to help you achieve your desired result. Risks associated with Eyelids Surgery include:

  • Difficulty closing the eyes: Some patients may experience difficulty opening and closing their eyes after surgery. This issue is largely due to swelling and will almost always resolve itself within 1-2 weeks.
  • Reaction to Anesthesia: Some patients experience an adverse reaction to anesthesia that may result in nausea or vomiting, allergic reactions and in very rare cases death. Be sure to discuss any medical allergies with your surgeon.
  • Infection: as with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection. Infection will generally occur within days or weeks of your procedure, and in most cases can be treated with medication. In rare cases, and additional surgery may be required to treat severe infections
  • Bleeding & Hematoma: Some patients are more prone to bruising than others and, in extreme cases, may experience excessive bruising, bleeding or skin death.
  • Facial Nerve Injury/Loss of Sensation: Some patients may experience temporary or permanent loss of sensation in or around the treated area.
  • Asymmetry: Some patients may experience asymmetry in their results over time due to the body’s natural aging or partial rejection of the surgical procedure, which can generally be addressed with an additional correctional surgery.

Prior to Your Eyelids Surgery Procedure

Prior to your surgery, we will schedule a preoperative appointment with Dr. Min. The purpose of this meeting is to make sure that your procedure goes smoothly and efficiently. Our staff will review your consent forms with you, answer any questions you might have, and the risks and benefits of surgery will be thoroughly reviewed. You may be given your prescriptions to be filled prior to your surgery. You will be given a list of medications and supplements to avoid for two weeks before and after surgery. If you are a smoker, you will be advised to stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery. You should not smoke for at least two weeks following surgery.

Your Eyelids Surgery Procedure

We will do everything in our power to help you feel informed and relaxed on the day of your procedure. After you arrive at our Bellevue office, you will meet with Dr. Min and with your anesthesiologist. Once any questions you have are answered, you will be given medication to help you relax. You will be brought into the surgical suite, where you will be prepped for surgery and given a general anesthetic or a local with sedation. Surgery usually takes 1-2 hours. You will wake up in the recovery room, where you’ll be closely monitored. Your vision will be blurry due to the eyedrops you’ll be given. We’ll let you know how everything went and advise you on what to expect as you recover. You’ll want to be sure to arrange for someone to pick you up and stay with you for the first couple days as you adjust.

After Your Eyelids Surgery Procedure

You’re still our patient after you leave, and we will be there for you as you recover to answer any questions you may have and advise you on any side effects you may be feeling. Patients can generally return home within a matter of hours. You will be given special cold compresses and medication to manage pain and swelling as well as prescription eyedrops and instructions for using them. Dr. Min will advise you on the specifics of your recovery program. Patients can begin moving around right away and resume light exercise after about a week. Most patients return to work in 5-10 days, but you should avoid strenuous activity for at least 2 weeks, and avoid high impact activities (skiing, wakeboarding, contact sports) for the duration of your recovery (3-6 weeks). Your stiches will dissolve and be absorbed by your body, so you will not have to worry about getting them removed. Here’s a timeline of a typical recovery: First 24 hours:
