Ever wish you could simply peel a few years off your skin? Chemical peels are safe and effective in-office procedures to rejuvenate the skin and reduce signs of aging. Chemical peels can improve the appearance of:
- Fine lines
- Hyperpigmentation (skin discoloration or age spots)
- Enlarged pores due to an improper daily skincare regimen
- Light sun damage
- Light freckling
- Minimal scarring
Chemical peels are usually applied to the face, but there are also chemical peel treatments for the face, arms, legs, neck, chest and hands.
How it works
Chemical peels are the use of acids to safely remove the dead keratin layers of facial skin, resulting in the elimination of superficial wrinkles, age spots, and sun damage.
The Newvue Approach to Chemical Peels
We use an acid known as Trichloracidic Acid, or “TCA” which is the active ingredient in the Obagi Blue Peel. Our trained aestheticians customize the strength and depth of the peel based on your goals and your skin type.
Your Chemical Peel Options
Dr. Min and your aesthetician will work with you to customize a treatment that matches your skin and your goals. It is important to work with a licensed medical professional to ensure that your results are natural and your recovery is minimized. In addition to helping you pick the right type of peel, we will customize the strength and duration of your treatment based on your needs. Generally, the stronger the solution used, the deeper it will penetrate. Deeper penetrating peels have more significant results, but they also have longer recovery times.
Types of Chemical Peels offered at Newvue:
Glycolic Acid Peel: One of the mildest chemical peels, this solution also know as an alpha hydroxyl peel. The chemicals are naturally occurring acids that can be found in substances such as sugar cane juice.
Salicylic Acid Peel: This slightly stronger, beta-hydroxy peel is often used in the treatment of acne.
Retinoic Acid Peel: This intermediate depth peel is used to remove scars as well as smooth wrinkles and correct pigmentation problems.
Mandelaic Acid Peel: A type of alpha hydroxy peel similar to glycolic acid but less penetrating and irritating. A great choice for a first-time chemical peel.
Trichloracidic Acid (TCA) Peel: An intermediate to deep peeling agent frequently used to correct deeper wrinkles and scarring.
Safety & Risks of Chemical Peels
In the hands of doctor who has experience with chemical peels, side effects tend to be mild. Proper care, including minimizing sun exposure and not picking scabs, is important to minimize the risk of side effects. Some patients develop:
- Persistent redness that may last for months.
- Temporary darkening of the skin.
- Lighter skin color (medium and deep peels).
- Scarring (very rare when peel performed by a dermatologist).
Your Chemical Peel Procedure
The treatment is an office procedure that takes only 10-15 minutes. A chemical solution will be applied to the affected area (usually your entire face). The depth of the peel can be adjusted. During the application, you may experience a cool, warm or hot sensation. After the prescribed time elapses, the chemicals will be rinsed form your face and a soothing cream will be applied.
After Your Chemical Peel Procedure
Repeat treatment may be needed to maintain results and sunblock must be used for several months. A TCA peel may cause significant swelling, depending on the strength of the peel used. The overall premise in this skin treatment is the deeper one penetrates into the skin, the more dramatic the improvements, but the longer the recovery. This procedure does have a four to five day recovery period, followed by a few weeks of moderate skin redness. Your aesthetician will advise you on how to properly care for your skin as you recover. We often recommend that chemical peels be complimented by a skin care system such as Obagi Nu-Derm to improve your results and speed your recovery.
Your body will naturally slough off dead skin cells to reveal a new, healthy layer of skin. As redness fades, your skin will look and feel youthful and revitalized. You will notice a dramatic reduction in fine lines and blemishes. You will notice a more even skin tone and a brighter complexion.
