Botox has become famous as a quick, safe and relatively painless way to smooth skin and remove signs of aging. Botox was first introduced in the late 1980s for treatment of muscle disorders. It has been FDA approved for the treatment of wrinkles and “frown lines” since 2002, and it has consistently been one of the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedures for the last decade.
How it works
Despite popular myths, Botox is not a “poison.” It is a dilute, purified form of Botulinum toxin, and like many other toxins, when properly refined, it has a number of highly beneficial medical applications. In addition to smoothing smile lines, frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, and chin puckering, it can also reduce ocular muscle spasms and help reduce excessive sweating in the hands or underarms.
Botox is injected into the skin at or near the point of a wrinkle or line. Unlike tissue fillers such as Juvederm, Botox does not fill wrinkles by adding volume, instead it actually block the nerve impulses that cause the muscles to tense and form creases. As the muscle weakens, wrinkles will soften, and often disappear completely.
The Newvue Approach to Botox
Having your Botox injections administered by a highly trained professional can make all the difference. Botox has become wildly popular because it is extremely effective, but the downside is that it has become common for people without medical training to be administering Botox. While anyone can give an injection, getting meaningful, natural results requires an understanding of anatomy that you won’t find in your average nail salon. Often, the most effective way to treat a crease or wrinkle is not to inject the site itself, but to inject the muscle that affects that area of skin. Improper injections can give patients an expressionless, “frozen” appearance often referred to as “Oscar Night Freeze.”
At Newvue, Dr. Min and your aesthetician will plan a customized series of injections which will be delivered by Dr. Min himself to take years off your face while still allowing for natural movement and expression.
Your Botox Consultation
Dr. Min and his staff will take the time to fully understand your goals and ensure that you have clear and realistic expectations about the results you can expect from Botox. He will study your skin and ask you to move your face so he can see how the underlying muscles affect the area in question. He will recommend a customized injection series to smooth wrinkles and lines while still preserving your facial movement and ability to form natural expressions.
Safety & Risks of Botox Injections
Botox has been FDA approved since 2002, and it is safely injected millions of times every year. It is important that you choose a licensed professional to ensure your injections are performed in a safe manner and a sterile environment. There are minimal side effects associated with Botox. Some patients experience mild soreness or irritation at the injection site, and a very small number may experience drooping or sagging in the injected area, but this is generally the result of inexperienced practitioners. A very small percentage of the population (less than 1%) will not respond to the benefits of Botox.
Your Botox Injection Procedure
Botox procedures usually take no more than 20 minutes. Injection points will be marked on your skin, and a nurse or aesthetician will apply a topical cream to help numb the area. The injections will be administered, and while there may be some slight discomfort, today’s needles are so fine that most patients experience almost no discomfort.
After Your Botox Injection Procedure
You can expect to experience mild soreness, as you would after any injection, which will fade quickly. You are free to immediately resume all normal activities, though we recommend you avoid intense sun exposure for at least 24 hours.
You can expect to see some results immediately, as your facial muscles relax, and the results will continue to improve over time, as the muscles weaken and lines and creases continue to smooth out. You’ll be amazed at how youthful and rejuvenated you will look and feel.
Botox results generally last between 3-4 months.
