The Newvue Approach to Pulsed-Dye Laser Skin Therapy
We have 2 dedicated suites in our Bellevue office with highly skilled aestheticians, led by Jennifer Gamble. For Pulsed-Dye Laser Skin Therapy, we use the VBeam Perfecta, by Candela, the most advanced pulsed dye laser technology available today.
We chose the VBeam Perfecta because it delivers results more quickly and with less discomfort than competitive models. It is able to deliver more intense pulses of energy to the treatment area without increased discomfort, largely because of its revolutionary “cooling” handpiece.
How it works
Pulsed dye lasers function very much as the name indicates: light (energy) is pulsed through a dyed organic liquid to produce the laser beam. These short but intense pulses of light are specifically tuned to target and destroy the red blood vessels and brown pigments associated with many blemishes, scars and skin conditions. The VBeam Perfecta laser will destroy the pigments and blood vessels being treated without affecting the surrounding tissue.
VBeam Treatments are non-ablative, which means that it does not burn through the skin. Ablative or semi-ablative laser treatments (often referred to as fractionated lasers or Fraxel) treat skin conditions by using the laser to burn small holes into the affected area and relying on the surrounding skin to promote healing. These procedures are generally indicated for more sever skin conditions, and the downside is greater discomfort and a longer recovery period (generally 7-10 days out of work).
With VBeam Pulsed-Dye Laser Skin Therapy, full results generally require 3-6 treatments, spaced one month apart, but most will notice results immediately. Your aesthetician will let you know how many treatments will be required based on your initial consultation.
Your Initial Pulsed-Dye Laser Skin Therapy Consultation
Your doctor and aestheticians will discuss Laser Resurfacing as part of your skin consultation at our Bellevue clinic. Our goal will be to understand your desired outcome and provide you with clear expectations around the details of the treatment and the results you can expect.
Your Newvue team will let you know the approximate duration and number of treatments it will take to achieve your goals based on your skin type, the nature of your skin condition, and the size of the affected area. Your aesthetician may advise treating a small test area so that you can better gauge your results before you commit to the full procedure.
Certain skin types, such as deeply tanned or black skin may be noticeably lightened and require 6-9 months to regain normal skin pigmentation. Your aesthetician will also advise you of certain conditions that may prevent you from getting VBeam or prevent it from being optimally effective, such as:
- Certain skin disorders
- Candidates taking certain medications
- Patients prone to scarring
- Metal Screws in the treatment area
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Skin Trauma
Safety & Risks of Pulsed-Dye Laser Skin Therapy
The VBeam Perfecta is FDA approved for all skin types and is considered to be the safest treatment option in this category.
Side effects are minimal and are generally similar to light sunburn. Patients may feel minimal swelling, itchiness, redness and slight discomfort. Most will subside in a few hours and be gone completely within 1-3 days.
In rare cases, patients may experience burns, blistering or bruising. Patients prone to scarring may see minor scarring after the procedure. In very rare cases, laser treatment have been know to trigger dormant infections or viruses.
Prior to Your Pulsed-Dye Laser Skin Therapy Procedure
You may want to shave the area you want treated a day in advance of your treatment to minimize any discomfort from razor burn, and you should avoid intense sun exposure or tanning.
Your Pulsed-Dye Laser Skin Therapy Procedure
A small area can be treated in minutes, and even large areas rarely take more than an hour. After your arrival at our Bellevue office, you will be shown into our private Laser suite. If necessary, the treatment area will be shaved (you can also shave it yourself prior to arrival). The esthetician will provide you with eye protection and may apply a cold gel to the area that will be treated and. The VBeam Perfecta handpiece will be placed against your skin, and your treatment will begin.
Pain is minimal. You will feel a sensation like a small rubber band being snapped against your skin followed by a gentle, warm sensation.
After Your Pulsed-Dye Laser Skin Therapy Procedure
Your skin will likely feel slightly swollen and appear somewhat red or pink (much like a sunburn). Your aesthetician can provide you with gels or crèmes to aid in your recovery, but most symptoms will resolve within 1-3 days, at which point most patients are able to resume normal activities, including wearing makeup. You should avoid excessive sun exposure or tanning and use a sunscreen throughout the duration of your treatment.
Here’s a timeline of a typical recovery:
First 24 hours:
- Mild discomfort (treatable)
After 72 hours:
- Side effects disappeared
- Return to activities, but minimize sun exposure, use of makeup or harsh lotions
After 1 week:
- Resume all normal activities
- Continue using sun protection
Some patients see results immediately, but most conditions require 3-6 treatments. Your results will depend on your skin, the treated area, and the number of treatments. Most patients see a dramatic reduction, if not a complete removal of skin discoloration, though it may take some time (3-9 months) before the skin pigment adjusts to completely match the surrounding area.
