Laser hair removal is an alternative to shaving, waxing, depilatories, plucking and electrolysis. In addition to immediate hair removal, it provides long-term growth delay and permanent hair reduction. Because laser hair removal targets the melanin (pigment) in your hair, it is most efficient on people with lighter skin and darker hair. However it is safe and effective for nearly all skin and hair types, and can cover large areas (as opposed to treating a single hair at a time like electrolysis).
Laser hair removal is a fast, highly accurate and virtually pain free way to remove hair and get right back to your normal activities.
How it works
Specially designed lasers emit wavelengths of light that are absorbed by the pigment in your hair (melanin). Much like a dark surface will absorb heat from the sun, the energy from the laser is transmitted to the darker pigment in your hair as heat. This is why laser hair removal works best on darker hair. The laser rapidly heats the hair shaft, destroying it and damaging the hair follicle, which slows and reduces its ability to regenerate and regrow.
Most patients require multiple treatments, but many will see results immediately. If your goal is merely to reduce the density of hair growth rather than completely remove it, you may not require a full treatment series.
The Newvue Approach to Laser Hair Removal
We have 2 dedicated suites in our Bellevue office with highly skilled aestheticians, led by Jennifer Gamble. We use the LightSheer Duet diode laser by Lumenis. The most advanced hair removal technology available today.
The greatest advantages of the LightSheer Duet are speed and patient comfort. A full back or legs treatment can be completed in as little as 20 minutes. The high-speed handpiece uses a gentle vacuum to stretch your skin, which allows the laser to target the hair more effectively with less skin discomfort. In most cases, the treatment does not even require a topical anesthetic, though your aesthetician can apply one at your request.
Your Initial Laser Hair Removal Consultation
Your doctor and aestheticians will discuss Laser Hair Removal as part of your skin consultation. Our goal will be to understand your desired outcome and provide you with clear expectations around the details of the treatment and the results you can expect.
Your Newvue team will let you know the approximate duration and number of treatments it will take to achieve your goals based on your skin and hair type. Your aesthetician may advise treating a small test area so that you can better gauge your results before you commit to the full procedure.
They will also advise you of certain conditions that may prevent you from getting laser therapy or prevent it from being optimally effective, such as:
- Skin disorders such as psoriasis, cystic acne, and dermatitis
- Candidates taking certain medications such as Retin-A or Accutane
- Candidates with Pacemakers
- Metal Screws in the treatment area
- Pregnant women
- Skin Trauma
Safety & Risks of Laser Hair Removal
The LightSheer Duet is FDA approved for all skin and hair types. It has an unsurpassed safety record.
Side effects are minimal and are generally similar to light sunburn. You may feel minimal swelling, itchiness, redness and slight discomfort. Most will subside in a few hours and be gone within a day.
In very rare cases, patients may experience blistering or bruising, which you should notify your doctor about immediately.
Prior to Your Laser Hair Removal Procedure
You may want to shave the area you want treated a day in advance of your treatment to minimize any discomfort from razor burn, and you should avoid intense sun exposure or tanning.
Your Laser Hair Removal Procedure
Your procedure will go fast. A small area can be treated in minutes, and even large areas rarely take more than an hour. You will be seated comfortably in our Laser suite. The patient must shave the area-prior to treatment, the hair does not need to be grown out to show the aesthetician. The aesthetician may apply a cold gel to the area that will be treated and provide you with eye protection. The LightSheer Duet handpiece will be placed against your skin, and your treatment will begin.
Pain is minimal. You will feel a sensation like a small rubber band being snapped against your skin followed by a gentle, warm sensation.
After Your Laser Hair Removal Procedure
You can resume normal activities almost immediately after your procedure. The appearance of your skin will vary depending on your treatment area, hair type and skin type. You should wash the area with a mild soap to encourage the treated hair to fall out. You can expect to feel some redness and swelling, which can be treated just like a sunburn, with hydrocortisone cream or aloe vera. You should avoid excessive sun exposure or tanning and use a sunscreen throughout the duration of your treatment. You will be able to shave after a couple days, but tweezing, waxing and depilatory creams should be avoided for the duration of your treatment.
Here’s a timeline of a typical recovery:
First several hours:
- Mild, localized discomfort (redness, itching)
- Shedding of hair from treated area
After 24 hours:
- Side effects disappeared or greatly diminished
- Return to activities, but minimize sun exposure
- Always wear sunscreen with 7% or more zinc oxide
After 3 days:
- Resume shaving
- All side effects completely gone
Some patients see results immediately, but most conditions require 5-6 treatments. Your results will depend on your skin and hair type, the treated area, and the number of treatments. While you will see a permanent hair reduction, it may mot remove every hair from the treated area, and you may require touch up treatments as your body changes with age. You will notice that hair that does come back will grow more slowly and will often be lighter or thinner.
